Sanctuary (2021) is a digital illustration based on the video game series, Kingdom Hearts. Two of the main characters, Sora and Kairi, have been queered in this rendition. In my version, Sora is the trans masculine protagonist holding one of his childhood best friends, a dyke-identified Kairi. They’re both adults, wearing clothing inspired by Vietnamese, Korean, and Hmong cultures, and enjoying life on the beach of Destiny Islands.

Sanctuary was drawn during the darkest part of Minnesota’s COVID winter. It is named after Sanctuary by Hikaru Utada, the theme song of Kingdom Hearts II.
